Our steel plates are proudly made in Arizona with American-made steel! But why does it matter? Steel is steel, right? Wrong!
American steel goes through rigorous testing to ensure it isn’t brittle and won’t crack when being welded or formed. The majority of imported steel comes from China, where companies are not required to conduct these tests. While they claim to have made improvements in their testing, there are still concerns with their inclusion control.
Nonmetallic inclusions are foreign substances embedded inside steel during the manufacturing process. They have different chemical origins and properties that significantly affect steel’s formability, toughness, and corrosion resistance. The fewer inclusions, the higher the quality of the steel.
Organizations like The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) created a set of standards for American steel manufacturers that determine the proper “ingredients” to ensure the quality of steel. Using inferior steel can have life-threatening consequences – such as body armor that cracks rather than stopping a bullet. That’s why it matters where the steel for our plates comes from. That’s why we proudly use American-made steel in our Patriot Home Defense sets.
